چکیده

The concept of usability contains different analytic tools, which support developers to focus on important aspects of IT-system design and evaluation. Usability research has focused both cognitive aspects of IT-systems (such as how to design the user interface), as well as an understanding of the work tasks the user performs using the IT-system. This paper presents an analysis of a set of commonly used usability principles. The analysis is based on a conceptualization of the user interface concept, which is based on a socio-instrumental perspective that acknowledges the communicative character of IT-systems. It is shown that contemporary usability principles need to be reinterpreted and complemented with design principles based on social action and human-to-human communication.

Socio-Instrumental Pragmatism: A Theoretical Synthesis for Pragmatic Conceptualisation in Information Systems

A need for pragmatic conceptualisation and theorizing in the information systems field is acknowledged. Instead of “importing” completed action theories from reference disciplines an alternative approach is preferred. In order to arrive at seamless theorizing in IS, a theoretical synthesis of different action aspects is developed well adapted to the IS field. The theoretical roots and some esse...

Socio-instrumental usability: IT is all about social action

Usability is an important concept that seems to receive less attention than it deserves outside of the core Human-Computer Interaction community. IT Artifacts as Socio-Pragmatic Instruments: Reconciling the Pragmatic, Semiotic, and Technical

There are many attempts to explain success and failure in information systems. Many of these refer to a purported sociotechnical gap. The developed theory involves not only the “social” and “technical” construc...
